Meals are technical production waste products of processing of certain industrial crops.
Depending on the primary product, there are sunflower, linseed, soybean, cotton, peanut, hempseed cakes and meals, etc.
To poultry farming, soybean and sunflower cakes and meals are of greatest interest.

Meals are differentiated according to their production method. The seed meal is obtained by oil production by oil extraction. Seed meals have only 2-3 % of fat.

Fields of application of the sunflower meal: It is used as a feed for cattle, poultry and fish. It is used separately or as an additive to a mixed feed. It contains up to 43 % of digestible proteins. The sunflower meal increases animals' fertility and improves the quality of a livestock produce, e.g. it increases the content of fat in milk and raises its daily yield.
Broiler chicken: The sunflower meal is widely used for poultry feeding. It is introduced into a daily allowance of 7-14 days old chickens. The sunflower meal's main advantage is its resistance to mycotoxins damages, and therefore the minimal damage probability related to risk factors which accompany the sunflower meal to a lesser extent than other types of feed. For poultry farming, the most valuable is the meal with a small quantity of shells.
Laying hens: The feeding of laying hens with feed based on the fibre rich (20 %) sunflower meal results in a considerable reduction of feed consumption and in a daily weight gain.
